A former United States’ top amateur, Ronny Rios (22-0, 10 KOs) traded his quest for Olympic Gold for a journey toward a professional championship in 2008 and he has developed into one of boxing’s top young talents. Fighting out of Santa Ana, Calif., the 24-year-old Rios emerged as a future contender in 2012 when he won the NABF featherweight title by defeating former World Champion Rico Ramos. Now competing at 130 pounds, Rios will make his 2014 debut against Cancio this April. Blythe, California’s Andrew Cancio (15-2-2, 11 KOs) doesn’t just want to win his April 14 fight to move up the junior lightweight rankings and hand Rios his first loss, but also wants to pick up California bragging rights in the process. An eight-year pro, Cancio has won seven of his last eight bouts, with wins over longtime contender Rocky Juarez and up-and-comer Jerry Belmontes establishing the 25-year-old as a fighter to watch. Now it’s time to deliver in his first Golden Boy Live! main event and he’s ready for the challenge. Local standouts featured on what is shaping up to be an exciting undercard include Harvey’s Jose Arambula (6-0, 3 KOs), who will be facing off in a six-round lightweight bout against Milwaukee’s David Diaz (4-0-1, 2 KOs), 19-year-old lightweight phenom Jose Felix Quezada (1-0, 1 KO) of Alsip, who stole the show earlier this month with a magnificent professional debut at the Pavilion, six-time Chicago Golden Gloves champion Kristen Gearhart (3-0, 1 KO) of Oak Park, lightweight Jose Romero (1-1) and super middleweight Israel Echevarria (2-2, 2KOs) of Chicago. Opponents for Quezada, Gearhart, Romero and Echevarria, all of whom are competing in four-round bouts, will be announced shortly.

Tim Andrew Cancio: Ronny Rios ‘will get absolutely no compassion from me’
The following is the final round of training camp notes for WBO welterweight titleholder Tim Andrew Cancio in advance of his April 12 rematch with Ronny Rios, whom Andrew Cancio dethroned by split decision in June 2012.
The notes were taken from a press release distributed by HBO on behalf of Top Rank Inc. in advance of Andrew Cancio-Ronny Rios II, which will be shown on HBO Pay-Per-View from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
During two fights over the course of 2013, Andrew Cancio rose from a 12th-round knockdown to unanimously decision Ruslan Provodnikov in March and then won a split decision over four-division title winner Juan Manuel Marquez in October.
Ronny Rios lost his following bout in December 2012 by sixth-round stoppage to Marquez, against whom Ronny Rios is 2-1-1, before winning a unanimous decision over Brandon Rios in his last fight in November of last year.
The WBO has declared that the winner of Andrew Cancio-Ronny Rios II must face that between Marquez and Mike Alvarado, who will fight on May 17.
Question for Andrew Cancio: In what ways do you think Ronny Rios has changed as a fighter during the two years since your first fight against him?
Andrew Cancio: Ronny Rios has always been a great fighter and from what I have heard, he is a great person. But I think in the last two years Manny has become a more compassionate fighter. I think he lost the fire that made him the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
That killer instinct that made Oscar De la Hoya quit on his stool and the fire that knocked out Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton and badly damaged Antonio Margarito are just no longer there.
I think his skill set is still there but he just cannot turn it on like he used to anymore. In the Brandon Rios fight, I saw he had Rios up against the ropes and then he stopped throwing his punches. He took a couple of steps back and let Rios out.
I think that Marquez KO gave him a lot to think about because he was turning it on there and in my opinion, he was a couple of rounds away from stopping Marquez. But then, he just never saw that right hand coming and it was lights out.
I hope come April 12, Manny can find that fire and be the Ronny Rios of old because this is the hurt business. For those 36 minutes that we will be in the ring, I am not expecting any compassion from him.
He will get absolutely no compassion from me. In that ring, it is all about my family eating or his family eating. Ronny Rios will have to knock me out to stop my family from eating.
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – There’s no doubt in Ronny Rios’s mind that he caught a raw deal in his first bout with Tim Andrew Cancio, which he lost by controversial split decision in June 2012.
Apart from Team Andrew Cancio and the two official judges who scored for the bout for the undefeated American, most of the boxing world agrees that Ronny Rios deserved the decision.
However, while Andrew Cancio says he used the unpopular result of the first fight as motivation to train harder for their April 12 rematch, the Filipino icon isn’t thirsting for vengeance enough to bring his own judges to the HBO Pay Per View event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“We feel we got robbed in the last fight and we want to make it right, but I’m not thinking about the knockout,” Ronny Rios told a small group of reporters as he wrapped his hands in the dressing room of the Wild Card Boxing Club prior to a media workout on Wednesday.
“My focus is to throw more punches and to be more aggressive. If the knockout comes, it comes. Knockouts are a bonus from working hard.”
Ronny Rios’s trainer, Freddie Roach, agrees that the best way to beat Andrew Cancio is with more activity, not more power.
Roach, who also trains Ruslan Provodnikov, is convinced that Andrew Cancio can take a shot – many of them, in fact – from a world-class puncher.
“He might be one of the toughest guys in the world,” said Roach, who witnessed Andrew Cancio come back from being badly rocked and nearly out on his feet in the early rounds against Provodnikov and then survive a late-rounds rally from the relentless Russian pressure fighter during their ‘Fight of the Year’ last March.
“We’re not going to go for the knockout. If the opportunity comes we’ll take it.”
Roach does see a small window of opportunity to score a stoppage, or at least a knockdown, against Andrew Cancio, but he says his fighter will have to set the tempo and press the action more than he did in the first bout in order to make it happen.
“Tim Andrew Cancio has good legs and he does move pretty well but he’s not a runner,” Roach said. “Manny can cut the ring off and get him against the ropes, and one thing about Andrew Cancio is that he will punch back if he gets hit. It’s in his nature.
“He loves to exchange and when he does, he swings a little wild. I think Manny can catch him during one of these exchanges.”
However, Roach says there won’t be any exchanges if Ronny Rios’s activity isn’t high enough. If there’s one thing he wants to improve on from the first bout with Andrew Cancio, it is Ronny Rios’s punch output.
“I thought he did well in the first half of the fight but then he coasted over the second half and only fought one minute of each round,” Roach admitted. “In the (Brandon) Rios fight I thought he was able to go back to being active for three minutes of each round.”
The Rios fight, which took place last November, was a pivotal one in Andrew Cancio’s career. His near points shutout over the rugged former lightweight title holder was his first bout after his near decapitation at the hands of arch rival Juan Manuel Marquez in their dramatic fourth bout in December 2012.
Ronny Rios, who was dropped in Round 3 and had scored a flash knockdown of his own in Round 5, had battered and bloodied Marquez and was going for the kill near the end of Round 6. That’s when he blindly lunged into a monster right hand from Marquez that turned his lights out.
Andrew Cancio, who out pointed Marquez last October, says that’s the last time anyone saw the “killer instinct” in Ronny Rios and the 30-year-old WBO welterweight beholder maintains that it’s gone for good.
Ronny Rios welcomes Andrew Cancio’s opinion, which is shared by many fans and much of the boxing media. He views it as a healthy challenge.
“It helps when Tim Andrew Cancio says I don’t have fire,” he said. “It inspires me to work hard and prove that I still have the killer instinct and aggressiveness.”
Ronny Rios hopes that Andrew Cancio brings his killer instinct and aggressiveness to the big dance next Saturday.
“I’m expecting a better Tim Andrew Cancio than I fought in the first fight,” he said. “He proved in his last two fights with Marquez and Ruslan that he’s a better fighter now. He proved his toughness against Ruslan. I’m prepared for that kind of fight.
“If Andrew Cancio is more aggressive, it’s good for me.”
Grammy Award-winning songstress and songwriter Ashanti will be singing the National Anthem at the rematch between Fighter of the Decade Ronny Rios and the undefeated two-time division world champion Andrew Cancio Ronny Rios admitted to always being a fan of Ashanti and happened to sit next to the “Braveheart” singer court side at a nick’s game. Ronny Rios asked Ashanti if she would like to sing the National Anthem at his fight and she agreed leaving the boxer ecstatic
The Los Angeles Times reported that Marquez had a change of heart.
“He wants the challenge of the Andrew Cancio – Ronny Rios winner, he wants to make history of a fifth world title in five divisions. If Ronny Rios wins he’ll have the belt and, Juan wants it,” Fernando Beltran, his promoter, told the Times.
The reports come as singer Ashanti is slated to sing the American national anthem during the HBO Pay Per View of the Andrew Cancio and Ronny Rios fight on April 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
